Note to members of the Diplomatic Corps, the press and the public
Closure of the accreditation and admission procedures
THE HAGUE, 23 November 2012. Owing to the renovation of the Great Hall of Justice of
the Peace Palace, where the Court usually sits, the public hearings in the case concerning the
Maritime Dispute (Peru v. Chile), due to be held from Monday 3 to Friday 14 December 2012, will
take place in the auditorium of The Hague Acad emy of International Law, whose building is
adjacent to the Peace Palace.
Members of the Diplomatic Corps, the press and the public are requested to take note of the
following points.
1. Seating for members of the Diplomatic Corps
Owing to the limited number of seats available in the auditorium of the Academy of
International Law, seats will also be reserved fdiplomats in the Historic Reading Room of the
Peace Palace Library, where a large screen will be set up. Members of the Diplomatic Corps
wishing to attend the hearings are kindly asked to inform the Information Department
before midnight on Tuesday 27November2012 (The Hague time, CET), by e-mail to
[email protected]. Diplomatic missions ar e kindly requested to limit their delegations to a
maximum of five.
2. Closure of the press accreditation procedure
The online press accreditation procedure, which has been open on the Court’s website (under
the heading “Calendar”) since 14 November 2012, will close at midnight on Tuesday 27 November
(The Hague time, CET). Only online application forms will be accepted.
3. Closure of the public admission procedure
The online public admission procedure, which has been open on the Court’s website (under
the heading “Attending a hearing/sitting”) since 14November2012, will close at midnight on
Tuesday 27November (The Hague time, CET). On ly online application forms will be accepted.
Members of the public will be seated in the Histor ic Reading Room of the Peace Palace Library,
where they will be able to follow the hearings on a large screen. - 2 -
4. Live web streaming of the hearings
The hearings will be broadcast live and in full on the Court’s website (under the heading
“Multimedia”). These hearings will be broadcast simultaneously in the two official languages of
the Court (English and French), as well as in Spanish (non-official translation).
5. Press access
It is recalled that journalists must bring with them their personal ID and press card. Only
duly accredited individuals with valid identifica tion will be permitted to enter the Peace Palace
grounds. A temporary Press Room will be available. The Peace Palace gates and Press Room will
be opened to the press daily one hour before the st art of the hearings (for the schedule, see point 10
below). The gates will be closed one hour after the end of the final sitting of the day, at which time
members of the press must leave the Peace Palace grounds.
6. Press Room
The Press Room will be equipped with audio-visual facilities (see below), as well as wireless
Internet access (Wi-Fi).
Available video feeds (16:9 PAL format): HD-SDI with four-channel sound (original
language, French, English and Spanish), SD-SDI with four-channel sound (original language,
French, English and Spanish) and analogue (com posite). Please note that the Court does not
provide an NTSC signal.
Available audio feeds: XLR outputs with four separate channels (original language,
French, English and Spanish) and individual infra-red headsets (four separate channels:
channel 0 = original language, channel 1 = French, channel 2 = English and channel 3 = Spanish).
7. Satellite vehicles
No parking is allowed in the Peace Palace grounds apart from sate llite (SNG) vehicles.
Media wishing to park satellite vehicles are request ed to complete the appropriate fields in the
online accreditation form. The Court’s field patch is reserved for those vehicles. Stand-up
positions cannot be erected outside the area reserved for that purpose, in front of the Peace Palace.
8. Information available during the hearings
Verbatim records of the hearings will be published daily on the Court’s website (with
translations to follow as soon as practicable thereafte r). On the final day of the oral proceedings, a
Press Release will be issued, reproduc ing the final submissions of the Parties. It should be noted,
however, that the Court’s Press Releases do not constitute official documents.
It is recalled for the Spanish press, in particular, that informative documents and a film about
the Court (in mpeg2 and Flash format) are available, in Spanish, on its website. - 3 -
9. Press access to the courtroom
Media representatives may attend the hearings in the auditorium, where seats will be
reserved for them (on the right hand side of the entrance). However, they are not permitted to leave
the courtroom during the hearings or to bring any electronic equipment into the courtroom. Only
the taking of photographs will be permitted, for a few minutes at the start of each sitting:
photographers and camera crews must keep to the right side of the auditorium.

It is recalled that the schedule for the heari ngs and the history of the proceedings can be
