Case concerning the Land and Maritime Boundacy
between Cameroon and Nigeria

(Cameroon v. Nigeria}

The following information is communicated to the Press by the Registry of the International

Court of Justice:

On 13 December 1995, within the time-limit for the fïling of its Counter-Memoria\, Nigeria
filed certain preliminary objections in the above case. The objections related to the jurisdiction of

the Court and to the admissibility of the daims of Cameroon.

By virtue of Article 79, paragraph 3, of the Rules of Court, the proceedings on the merits are

suspended when preliminary objections are filed; proceedings have then to be organized for the
consideration of those pre!iminary objections in accord ance with the provisions of that Article.

By an Order of ID January 1996, the President of the Court, taking into account the views

expressed by the Parties at a meeting between the President and the Agents of the Parties held on
10 January 1996, fixed 1S May 1996 as the time-!imit within which Cameroon may present a

written statement of its observations and submissions on the preliminal)' objections raised by
Nigeria.

The subsequent procedure has been reserved for further decision.
