Fisheries Jurisdiction Case

(Spain v. Canada)

The following information is communicated to the Press by the
Registry of the International Court of Justice:

In the above case, which was brought before the Court by Spain on

28 March 1995 (see Press Communiqué 95/9 of 29 March 1995), Spain founded
the jurisdiction of the Court on the declarations made by the two Parties
in accordance with Article 36, paragraph 2, of the Statute. Canada, in a

letter of 21 April 1995, contested the jurisdiction of the Court.

Taking into account the agreem~nt concerning the procedure reached
between the Parties at a meeting with the President of the Court, held on

27 April 1995, the President, by an Order of 2 May 1995, decided that the
written proceedings shall first be addressed to the question of the
jurisdiction of the Court to entertain the dispute and fixed the

following time-limits for the filing of those pleadings::

- 29 September 1995 for the Memorial of the Kingdom of Spain; and

• - 29 February 1996 for the ·caunter-Memorial of ca·nada.

The subsequent procedure is reserved for further decision.
