Ceremony in honour of Judge Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade
THE HAGUE, 31 May 2023. On Tuesday 23 May 2023, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, in collaboration with The Hague Academy of International Law, held an event to commemorate the life of the Brazilian jurist Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade, who served as a Member of the Court from 2009 until his death on 29 May 2022 and as a member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy from 2004 to 2022.
Beginning with a welcome address by HE Judge Joan E. Donoghue, President of the Court, the event consisted of two parts: a series of speeches celebrating Judge Cançado Trindade’s legacy as a man and a jurist, followed by a panel discussion on the theme of “Antônio Cançado Trindade and the humanization of international law: his visionary work”.
The speeches were given by Mr Yves Daudet, President of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law, HE Judge Patrick Lipton Robinson, Member of the Court, HE Judge Ricardo C. Pérez Manrique, President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, Mr Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, former President of the European Court of Human Rights and member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law, Mr Pedro Escosteguy Cardoso, Minister-Counsellor and chargé d’affaires ad interim at the Embassy of Brazil in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Mr Adriano Drummond Cançado Trindade, son of Judge Cançado Trindade.
After a brief musical interlude, the panel discussion was moderated by Mr Maurice Kamto, member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law. The panellists included HE Judge Hilary Charlesworth, Member of the International Court of Justice and member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law, Ms Hélène Tigroudja, member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, Mr Rick Lawson, University of Leiden, and Mr Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Secretary-General of The Hague Academy of International Law. HE Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, Member and former President of the International Court of Justice, closed the event with some concluding remarks.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It was established by the United Nations Charter in June 1945 and began its activities in April 1946. The Court is composed of 15 judges elected for a nine-year term by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations. The seat of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands). The Court has a twofold role: first, to settle, in accordance with international law, through judgments which have binding force and are without appeal for the parties concerned, legal disputes submitted to it by States; and, second, to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized United Nations organs and agencies of the system.
