The Secreta.ry-Generalof the United Nations presents his compliments to the

Permanent Representative ofPortugal to the United Nations and has the hononr to

refer to hisnote No. ONU/1999/28 dated 8 January 1999, transmitting the instrument

ofratification·bytheGovermnent ofPortugal ofthe Convention on the Prevention and

Punislunent of the Cri.tïleof Genocide, adopted by the General Assembly of the United

Nations on 9 December 1948.

Portugal not being a signatory to the above Convention, the instrument of

the Secretary-General on 9 February 1999, the date ofits receipt.

Due note hasbeen taken of the declaration contained in the instrument.

In accordancewith its article XITI(3), the Convention will enter irito force for

Portugal on the ninetieth day following the date of deposit of the instrument, i.e., on

.'10 May 1999.

Ail States concerned are being informed accordingly.
