Proceedings on the merits
The following information is communicatedo the Press by the Registry of the International
Court of Justice:
On 26 June 1995, within the time-limit for the filing of its Counter-Memorial, Yugoslavia
filed certain preliminary objections in the above caseThe objections related, firstly, to the
admissibility of the Application and, second1y,to the jurisdiction of the Court to deal with the case.
By its Judgmentof 11 July 1996 (see Press CommuniquéNo. 96/25), the Court found that,
on the basis of Article IX of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of
Genocide, it bad jurisdiction to adjudicate upon the dispute and that the Application was admissible.
Fo1lowing that Judgment, time-limits for the written proceedings on the merits bad to
fixed. Having ascertained the views of the Parties, the President of the Court, by an Order of
23 July 1996, bas fixed 23 July 1997 as the time-limit for the Counter-Memorial of Yugoslavia.
The subsequent procedure is reserved for further decision.
