Case concerning Kasikili/Sedudu Island

(BotswanaiNamibia)

The foJlowing infonn ation is cornmunicated to the Press by the Registry of the International
Court of Justice:

The above case in which the Parties ask the Court to

"detennine, on the basis of the Angle-German Treaty of lst July 1980 and the rules
and principles of international law, the boundary between Namibia and Botswana
around Kasikili/Sedudu Island and the legal status of the island"

was brought before the Court on 29 May 1996 (see Press Communiqué 96119 of 30 May 1996).

By an Order of 24 June 1996 the Court, taking into account the agreement between the
parties witb regard to the written proceedings as expressed in Article Il, paragraph 2, of the Special
Agreement, bas fixed the following time-limits:

• 28 February 1997 for the fiiing by each of the Parties of a Memorial;

- 28 November 1997 for the filing by each of the Parties of a Counter-Memorial.

The subsequent procedure is reserved for further decision.
