Denmark brings a case against Norway

The following information is made available to the Press by the Kegistry
of the International Court of Justice:
On 16 August 1988 the Government of Denmark filed in the Registry of the
International Court of Justice an Application instituting proceedings against
Norway .
ln its application^, the Government of Denmark explains that despite
negotiations conducted since 1980, it has not been possible to find an agreed
solution to a dispute with regard to the delimitation of Denmark's and
ilorway's fishing zones and continental shelf areas in the waters between the
East Coast of Greenland and the Norwegian island of Jan Nayen, where there is

an area of some 72,000 square kilometres to which both parties lay claim.
therefore requests the Court:
"to decide, in accordance with international law, where a
single line of 'delimitation shall be drawn between Denmark's
and Aorway's fishi.ng zones and continental shelf areas in the
waters between Greenland and Jan Mayen".
