Case concerning the Land and Maritime Boundary
between Cameroon and Nigeria (Cameroon v. Nigeria)

Request for the indicationf provisional measures

The following information is made available to the Press by the Registry of the
• Internationalourt of Justice:

On 12 February 1996, the Registry of the International Court of Justice received .from the
Republicof Cameroon a request for the indication of provisional measures in the above case, with
reference to "serious armed incidents", which have taken place between Cameroonian and Nigerian­
forces in the Bakassi Peninsula beginning on 3 February 1996.

In its request Cameroon refers to the submissions made in its Application of29 March 1994,
supplemented by an Additional Application of 6 June of that year, as also summed up in its
Memorial of 16 March 1995, and requests the Court to indicate the following provisional measures:

"(l) the armed forces of the Parties shall withdraw to the position they were occupying
before the Nigerian armed attack of 3 February 1996;

(2) theParties shall abstain from ali military activity along the entire boundary until the
judgment of the Court is given;

(3) theParties shall abstain from adyor action which might hamper the gathering of
evidence in the present case".

ln the main proceedings, the Court, by an Order of 10 January 1996, fixed 15 May 1996 as
the time-limit within which Cameroon may present a written statement of its observations and
·submissions on the preliminary objections relating to the jurisdiction of the Court and to the
admissibilityf the claims of Cameroon which Nigeria filed on 13 December 1995 (see Press
Communique No. 96/1, of Il January 1996).
