The Government of the United States of America files an Application against the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Les renseignement suivants, 6mman.t du Greffe de la Cour
internationale de Justice, ont Bté mis à la disposition de la presse:

Le 2 juin 1955, le Gouvernement des mats-Unis dihdrique a
d&posé au Greffe de la Courune requête contre lIUnion des RYpubli~ues
socialistes sovitSt ique, relative B un incident aCrien survenu le
7 octobre 1952 au large de 1iPle dl Hokkaido (~apon) .

Dans sa requête, le Gauvernement des Etats-Unis allhgue qu à
cette date, un de ses avions a QtB pris en chasse au-dessus du terri-
toire japonais par deux avions de l'Union des Républi~es socizlistes
soviétiques, puis abattu en mer par ces avions. Il dernsnde à la Cour
de dire et juger que IfUnion des Républiques socialistes soui8ticpes

est responsable, et quielle doit lui verser titre dtindemite une
sommede $ 1.620.295.

Le Gouvernement des Etats-Unis diAndrique dit dans la requête
quiil est Loisible au Gouvernemen& de l'Union des RBpubliques socidistes
soviétiques cilaccepter la juridiction de la Cour: il peut le faire par
une déclaration appropriee, et 1â Cour pourra se prononces en liespbce,

The f ollowing informatiof nrom the International Court of

Justicehas been commmicated to the Press:

On June ad, 1955, the Goven~~ent of the United States of
herica filedin the Registry of the Court an Application against

the Union of Soviet Social3.t Republicsrelating to an aerial
incident which occurredon October?th, 195.2, off the island of
Hokkaido (~a~ari).

In lts Application the Governent of the United States of America
alleges that on that date one of Its ai~craft was pursued over
Sapanese terribory and then shot dom uitothe sea by two aircraft of
the U.S.S.R. It requests the Cou& to find that the U,S.S.R. is
liablefor the damages caused and to amrd damages iPithe sum of
$ 1,62O,Z55. -

The Govemgent of the United States of Americastateç in the
Application that it is open to the Governent of the U.S.S.R. ta
accept the jurisdictio onf the Court: 1% may do so by a appfopriate

declaratian and the G.urt will be enabled to determine the issues,

In accordance with Article 40 of the Statute, the Application has
been comunicated by the Registry to the Govemi~entoof the U,S.S.R.
The other necessary notifications wilL be made in the course of a few
days.
