The following information f rom the Registry of the International '

Court of Justice has be& commmicatcd ta the Press:

On Novembcr22nd, l9!+9, the General Assemblyof the United

Nations adopted a Resolution requesting the International Court of

Justice tci give an advisoryopinion on the following question:

ITCan the admission of a State to mernbership in the bnited

Nations, pursuantto Article 4, paragraph 2, of the Charter, be

effected by a decision of the GeneriL Assemblythen the Security

Gouncil has made no reçomendation for admission by reâson of

the candidate failing to obtainthe requisite rnajority or of the

negative vote of a permanent rnernberupon a resolution so to

re~omend?'~

Pursu~nt to thisRequest, the International Court of Justice

made on December2nd, 1949, an Order appointing January 24th,1950,

as the the-lhit for filirig written statements onthe question by

Members of the United Nations,
