Swearing-in of H.E. Mr. Georg Nolte, new Member of the Court Monday 8 February 2021 at 11 a.m.
THE HAGUE, 22 January 2021. The International Court of Justice will hold a public sitting on Monday 8 February 2021 at 11 a.m., during which H.E. Mr. Georg Nolte, new Member of the Court, elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations on 12 November 2020, will be officially sworn in.
Mr. Nolte will make the solemn declaration provided for in Article 20 of the Statute, which stipulates that “[e]very Member of the Court shall, before taking up his duties, make a solemn declaration in open court that he will exercise his powers impartially and conscientiously”.
In view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, only Members of the Court and a limited number of guests will be physically present at the sitting, which will take place in the Great Hall of Justice. Members of the diplomatic corps, the media and the public will be able to follow the event through a live webcast on the Court’s website, as well as on UN Web TV.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It was established by the United Nations Charter in June 1945 and began its activities in April 1946. The Court is composed of 15 judges elected for a nine-year term by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations. The seat of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands). The Court has a twofold role: first, to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States (its judgments have binding force and are without appeal for the parties concerned); and, second, to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized United Nations organs and agencies of the system.
