Certain Phosphate Lands in Nauru
(Nauru v. Australia)

The following information is communicated to the Press by the
Registry of the International Court of Justice:

In the case concerning Certain Phosphate Lands in Nauru
(Nauru v. Australia), the Government of Australia has submitted
preliminary objections to the jurisdiction of the Court and the
admissibility of the Application. These objections were filed in the
Registry of the Court on 16 January 1991, that is, within the time-limit
fixed for the filing of the Australian Counter-Memorial (21 January 1991).

In accordance with Article 79 of the Rules of Court, the proceedings
on the merits are suspended upon the filing of a prelimiary objection.

By an Order of today, 8 February 1991, the Court has fixed
19 July 1991 as the time-limit within which Nauru may present a written
statement of its observations and submissions on the objections.
